The Happiness of Pursuit

Many of us are taught that happiness is something we’re supposed to reach—as if it’s waiting for us somewhere in the future.
Once I fix this, once I feel better, once things are different… then I’ll be happy.

But DBT offers a different truth:

You don’t have to feel happy to be moving toward a life worth living.

In fact, happiness often shows up because you are moving.

The goal isn’t to eliminate pain or wait for motivation. The goal is to stay in motion — taking small, values-based steps even when your emotions haven’t caught up yet.

That’s the happiness of pursuit.

It looks like:

  • Trying, even when you feel unsure

  • Showing up, even when you feel tired

  • Choosing one small action that aligns with who you want to be

You may not feel joyful right away.
But with each step, you build momentum, meaning, and self-trust.

Happiness isn’t the destination.
It’s something that grows while you’re on the path.
