Wise Mind: Coming Home to Your Knowing Self
In DBT, we talk about three states of mind: Emotion Mind, Reasonable Mind, and Wise Mind. Most people learn the definitions quickly—but Wise Mind is not something you “figure out.” It’s something you return to.
I often describe Wise Mind as the knowing self—the part of you that already understands what you need, what matters, and what feels true, even when everything is loud and confusing.
Wise Mind is not louder than your emotions.
It is quieter.
Steadier.
Deeper.
It is a well of inner knowing that is always there, even when you feel far from it.
When Emotions Pull Us Away From What We Know
Strong emotions can make us forget what we already know. Fear, shame, anger, grief—they pull us into urgency and narrow our perspective.
In Emotion Mind, everything feels immediate and absolute:
This will never get better.
I have to fix this right now.
I can’t handle this.
But Wise Mind holds a broader truth:
This is hard, and it will change.
I can pause before I act.
I have survived difficult moments before.
Emotion mind doesn’t mean you’re wrong.
It means you’re overwhelmed.
Wise Mind is the place where your feelings are honored—but not in charge.
Your Wise Mind Is Already Inside You
You don’t have to create Wise Mind.
You don’t have to earn it.
You don’t have to be calm to access it.
It is already part of you.
It shows up in small moments:
When you take a breath instead of reacting
When you choose to be kind to yourself
When you pause and feel what’s right for you
Even a quiet “something feels off” is Wise Mind speaking.
How to Reconnect With Your Knowing Self
Wise Mind isn’t reached through force—it’s found through slowing down.
You might try:
Placing a hand on your heart or belly
Taking one slow breath
Asking gently: What do I know right now?
Listening without rushing for an answer
Sometimes Wise Mind speaks in words.
Sometimes in body sensations.
Sometimes as a calm sense of direction.
Trust that it knows.
A Closing Thought
You are not lost—you are just far from your knowing self.
Wise Mind is not a destination.
It is a home you can return to, again and again.
And each time you do, you remember:
you already carry the wisdom you are seeking.
